MARBLED SNAKE EEL
Callechelys marmorata (Bleeker, 1854)

Very similar to the much more common Freckled Snake Eel (Callechelys lutea), but has many spots on the the 'belly' whereas the Freckled Snake Eel has few spots there. Although the latter is found only in Hawaii, this species is widely distributed from East Africa to the Central Pacific, including French Polynesia and Hawai'i. It seems to be rare in Hawaii, but how rare is hard to assess because of the similarity of the two species in both appearance and lifestyle. These photos were taken at Ho'okena, Hawai'i, at a depth of about 30 ft.
