Euryleptid 17 Whitish with
evenly-distributed, soft-edged, red spots that are somewhat denser along
the medial ridge. Narrow white margin. Prominent red tentacles on the
anterior margin (but one tentacle missing on the worm in the photo) This worm is clearly related to Euryleptid sp. 17 on the Newman & Cannon CD except that it has red spots rather than black. The worm below was only 11 mm. long, so it might be the same species if the red spots change to black with age. For comparison, a photo of Euryleptid 17 (taken in Okinawa by Robert Boland) is posted on the Flatworms of the World website. The same Boland photo is included on the CD. Update August 2022:
Rebecca Bicker found another of these worms at a depth of 11 ft., under
a rock, also at Maliko Bay, Maui (photos 3-4). This one has both its
tentacles and was larger than Cory's worm, about 2 cm. The spots are
definitely red although the centers are almost black. Can anyone find
a larger one of these with all black spots? |
